Golden Bay - The Innlet, Farewell Spit, Collingwood, Takaka Or Dalia Khalil I presume? - 28th June-4th July

It has been a while, but yes, the atrocious spelling is back...

I can talk about the beauty of Golden Bay or the Innlet Backpackers or the Takaka or Cape Farewell or meeting up with Dalia after 9 years but what I know you all want to know is the TRUTH which I promised. We all have been on a long voyage together. I do not mean the travel which started at the end of September 2008 from Paris via the UK to the other side of the world But the true journey of discovery we started in Perth, the search for the TRUTH about Lattés & Flat Whites. At last I can put this debate which has ragged on the Internet - ok, ok which has ragged within me - to rest.

At the Innlet, Dalia conducted a scientific test - under controlled conditions, a pot of espresso was made. From this a latte and flat white were prepared. For the Flat white, the hot milk is poured into the coffee and in the Latté the coffee is poured into the milk. What is the result. Well as long as you do not stir the latte and you drink it quickly before the coffee is mixed in with the milk, their is a less homogenous taste to the latte than the flat white. Uhmmmmm! Really, no bloody difference.

Is this conclusive, well no. Every coffee shop has a different way of making lattés and Flat Whites. Some even serve their lattés in a bucket. The conclusion, if you want a decent coffee, ask an Italian!

At last the long voyage is at an end. We can put this enigma behind us and just do the drinking. Lots of it..

Now back to the other voyage...

So I arrived in Golden Bay and met up with Dalia again after 9 years and met Nigel. The backpacker Dalia managed is called the Innlet.

At some point it stopped raining, Dalia kicked me out of the backpackers with the keys her car, with a pack lunch - which in the end I left behind - and visited Cape Farewell The furthest point North of the South Island.

then other parts of Golden Bay, one of the sunniest places in New Zealand. Takaka, Collingwood...

discovered the HBO Comedy Tv series, Flight of the Conchords, its must see TV, ...

I think it is not words which are needed - yes i know i just waffled on in biblical proportions on the latté/flat white - just enjoy the photos. More from Dalia & Nigel over the weeks as we travelled together over to the North Island and off & On around the North Island

Good to see you back on the blog Dan. Not that we've not been in touch but its good to see some photos and a little bit of writing. Loved The Innlet so much when I was there. I was the only one there at the time apart from a couple in the bach and a Belgium who I met up with again in Scotland a few years after!!Do they still have the goat and composting toilet? I milked the goat! Have a photo somewhere. If you're back in Dunners again I'd like to share my photos with you. Now that you have seen a bit of the country it'll make more sense to you. Hope you make it down here again. Or we could maybe meet somewhere near?
Love Claire

Dan - just great to pick this up and cruise through the memories of The Innlet and Golden Bay with your fab photos. I met Dalia whilst travelling in NZ 2007/08 at the Innlet of course. WHat a special place!! And D and I remain in touch and in tune ... I return in January to present at a conference and spend time back in GB. Maybe meet you there sometime?
